I have found that adding 2 ties to each side will keep the cover taut and looks like a traditionally made box style cushion cover. Once you have the fabric cut out, use whatever method you've chosen to create the cushion covers. Then, take one of your fabric rectangle pieces and pin your ties right to the sides.
If you can’t find outdoor pillows in the color or pattern you like, simply modify your favorite indoor pillows. Turn the pillowcase right side out and insert the foam piece. Line up the edges of your side panel loop of fabric with the edge of the top panel (with the right sides together), and pin the edge in place.

Our bottom cushion measures 25×25 and the top cushion measures 25×21. The front and back should be right sides together. For the bottom piece, i just added 1 inch to the dimensions of the cushion to account for seam allowances.
You need two ties on the right side and two at. If your fabric is too wide or too long, trim it now. Though we chose standard sized cushions, you might need to adjust the plans slightly if you opt for different cushions, which is why it’s so important to get them first.
(if you’re starting from scratch and your chair is like mine, the chair back is taller then the seat is long…….so be sure to measure your chair and determine how tall you want the back section to be, compared to the seat. To refresh your cushions, there's no need to buy new ones, which can be expensive, and it can be hard to find just the right pattern. Since my cushion dimension was 25″ x 23″, my bottom piece of fabric was 26″ x 24″.
The cushions i bought were only just over $6 for a pack of four. Make sure you get your cushions before starting this project. Fold over end of each ribbon to make a finished edge and pin to fabric edge as shown in the illustration above.
For my cushion, this came out to be a 36″ x 34″ piece of fabric. Put the front of the cushion on the fold and cut a generous hem around the cushion. Since the cushions are thin, i used two cushions per chair.
My seat cushion is divided so that the top section is 20 inches tall and seat portion is 17.
